What is universal adult franchise?

Universal adult franchise means any Indian citizen aged 18 years or older has the right to vote. It removes barriers based on caste, gender, property or literacy; to vote, a citizen must be registered on the electoral roll of their constituency.

What does first-past-the-post mean?

First-past-the-post is an electoral system where the candidate with the largest number of votes in a constituency wins the seat. It does not require an absolute majority and can result in winners with less than 50% of total votes.

What is the role of the Election Commission of India?

The Election Commission plans, supervises and conducts elections, updates electoral rolls and enforces the Model Code of Conduct. It handles scheduling, booth arrangements, polling staff and counting to help ensure free and fair elections.

Who is eligible to vote?

Any Indian citizen aged 18 or above who is registered on the electoral roll of their constituency can vote, provided they are not disqualified by law (for example certain criminal convictions or a legal declaration of unsoundness of mind).
