Sound Waves Notes

About these notes

Class 9 Science Sound Waves gives concise notes and practice to learn wave nature, key formulas and numerical methods. Main sub-topics: longitudinal wave (compression and rarefaction), wavelength, frequency, amplitude, wave speed and v = fλ relation, pitch vs loudness, audible range, ultrasound/infrasound, reflection (echo, reverberation) and resonance (tuning forks). Ideal for Class 9 students preparing for school and board chapter tests, quick revision and exam practice. Students often search for class 9 science sound waves notes, important questions, MCQ and question answer while revising — use these notes together with site chapter tests and mock tests on msroh.in.

Key points you will learn

  • Sound is a longitudinal wave with compressions and rarefactions
  • v = fλ links speed, frequency and wavelength for numericals
  • Frequency determines pitch; amplitude controls loudness
  • Speed of sound depends on medium, temperature and density
  • Echo needs reflected sound to return after ≥0.1 s (use distance = v × time/2)
  • Draw labelled longitudinal diagrams showing compression/rarefaction for answers
  • Resonance with tuning forks shows natural frequency and sympathetic vibration
  • Audible range ≈ 20 Hz to 20 kHz; know basics of ultrasound and infrasound

Questions students ask

What is the relation used to find speed, frequency or wavelength?

Use v = fλ, where v is speed (m/s), f frequency (Hz) and λ wavelength (m). Rearrange to find any one: f = v ÷ λ or λ = v ÷ f. Plug consistent units for numericals.

How to calculate minimum distance for an echo?

Calculate time delay first: echo needs reflected sound to return after ≥0.1 s. Use distance to reflector = v × time ÷ 2 (because sound travels to reflector and back). Use v for air at given temperature.

Why can’t sound travel in vacuum?

Sound is a mechanical wave and needs particles to carry vibrations, so in vacuum there are no particles to transmit compressions and rarefactions and the wave cannot propagate.

How do frequency and amplitude affect sound?

Frequency sets pitch (higher frequency → higher pitch) in the first sentence. Amplitude controls loudness (greater amplitude → louder sound); timbre depends on waveform and harmonics.

Where to find class 9 science sound waves notes and important questions?

Use the Sound Waves notes on msroh.in for chapter summaries and formula lists; for wider practice search the site for chapter tests and mock tests to combine notes with revision and exam practice.
