Questions students ask

What is a noun?

A noun names a person, place, thing or idea. In Class 9 English you study types (proper, common, collective, material, abstract), plus gender, number, possessives and noun phrases with examples useful for MCQ and written answers.

How to form plurals for nouns ending in -y?

If a noun ends in -y with a consonant before it change -y to -ies (city → cities); if a vowel precedes -y simply add -s (boy → boys). Memorise irregular plurals separately.

Difference between proper and common nouns?

Proper nouns name specific people, places or organisations and take capital letters (India, Rahul), while common nouns name general items or people (country, boy). Proper nouns are treated as unique in grammar and usage.

How to use the possessive case for singular and plural nouns?

For a singular noun add 's (the girl's book); for a plural noun ending in s add only the apostrophe (the girls' room). Irregular plurals keep 's (the children's toys).
