Questions students ask

What is an adverb?

An adverb (क्रिया-विशेषण) modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb. It answers How, When, Where, How often or How much; examples: She sings sweetly, he arrived late, it is very hot.

Difference between adjective and adverb?

An adjective describes a noun or pronoun and an adverb modifies verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. Example: a quick reply (adjective) vs he replied quickly (adverb), and placement and questions asked differ.

How to make adverbs from adjectives?

Usually add -ly: quick→quickly. Change y to ily (happy→happily), le to ly (gentle→gently), ic to ally (tragic→tragically). Note exceptions like good→well and that not all -ly words are adverbs.

What is the difference between hard and hardly?

Hard means with great effort (She works hard); hardly means almost not (I can hardly hear you). They are not interchangeable and change the meaning of the sentence.
