Questions students ask

What is active and passive voice?

Active voice shows the doer of an action (Riya wrote a poem); passive voice makes the object the subject to focus on the action or receiver (A poem was written by Riya). Passive often hides or omits the doer.

Difference between active and passive voice?

Active focuses on the subject performing the verb; passive focuses on the action or the receiver. Formally, active: Subject + V + Object; passive: Object becomes subject + appropriate be-verb + V3 (+ by Subject sometimes).

How to change active to passive?

Move the object to the front, use the correct be-verb for the tense with the main verb’s V3, and optionally add 'by' + original subject. Example: She writes a letter → A letter is written by her.

Can every sentence be changed into passive voice?

No. Only sentences with transitive verbs (verbs that take an object) can be made passive. Intransitive verbs (sleep, arrive, rise) and many state verbs (have, resemble, suit) are usually not passivised.
