About these notes

Class 6 Social Science Timeline and Sources of History notes explain how to read and make timelines, use BCE/CE, place events in centuries and decades, and identify primary, secondary, oral and material sources. Main sub-topics: drawing timelines with equal intervals and scales, marking centuries/decades, examples of coins, inscriptions and monuments, secondary accounts (books/articles), oral evidence and checking reliability by cross‑comparison. For Class 6 students (CBSE / Bihar Board) this chapter is useful for revision, chapter test practice and building clear question answer skills for date-based and source-analysis questions.

Key points you will learn

Questions students ask

How to make a simple timeline?

Put events in chronological order from oldest to newest and mark years or approximate centuries in the first sentence. Then choose a scale (for example 10 or 50 years per interval), draw equal spaces, add short notes and century/decade labels for each event.

What is the difference between BCE and CE?

BCE means years before year 1 and comes earlier; CE means years from year 1 onward. Use these labels on timelines and when you place events into centuries or decades, remembering century numbers count forward from year 1.

Give examples of primary sources.

Primary sources include coins, inscriptions, monuments, letters and objects found at sites. These give direct evidence from the past and are compared with other material or written accounts to establish dates and meaning.

How do historians check if a source is reliable?

They compare it with other sources and ask who created it, when and why in the first sentence. They also check archaeological context, material condition and contradictions before using it in answers.
