About these notes

Class 6 Social Science Oceans and Continents notes for CBSE and Bihar Board students explain the seven continents, five oceans, and essential map skills with clear facts and revision tips. Main sub-topics: names and relative positions of continents and oceans; size comparisons (Pacific, Arctic) and Earth’s 71% water vs 29% land; landforms — island, peninsula, isthmus, cape and archipelago; polar regions and climate; basic latitude and longitude (Equator, Prime Meridian); map labelling, directions (N, S, E, W) and simple mnemonics. Suitable for Class 6 chapter tests, school exams and map practice; Merit Spring ROH also offers chapter tests and mock tests site-wide.

Key points you will learn

  • Class 6 Social Science Oceans and Continents notes: seven continents and five oceans — names and positions
  • About 71% of Earth is water and 29% is land; compare Pacific (largest) and Arctic (smallest)
  • Definitions and examples: continent, island, peninsula, isthmus, cape, archipelago
  • Map skills: labelling, using directions (N, S, E, W), and locating using Equator and Prime Meridian
  • Latitudes and longitudes basics — how Equator divides north/south and why longitude locates east/west
  • Polar regions: Arctic (north) and Antarctica (south) — cold climate, ice caps and limited vegetation
  • Exam tip: practise map labelling regularly and use mnemonics to remember continent-ocean positions

Questions students ask

How many continents and oceans are there?

There are 7 continents and 5 oceans on Earth. The continents are Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia; the oceans are Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern (Antarctic) and Arctic, and you should learn their relative positions for map tasks.

Which is the largest and which is the smallest ocean?

The Pacific Ocean is the largest and the Arctic Ocean is the smallest. Remember the Pacific covers the biggest surface area, while the Arctic is the smallest and shallowest, often ice-covered in winter.

What is the difference between a continent and an island?

A continent is a very large continuous landmass while an island is much smaller and completely surrounded by water. In exams give examples (Asia vs Sri Lanka) and note size, population and neighbouring oceans when asked.

How to prepare for map questions in the exam?

Start by memorising names and relative locations, practise labelling maps under time, use compass directions (N, S, E, W) and test yourself on Equator/Prime Meridian positions. Regular timed map drills improve speed and accuracy.

Where can I find Class 6 Social Science Oceans and Continents important questions and MCQ?

Look for the Oceans and Continents notes and practice sections on Merit Spring ROH where chapter tests and mock tests are available site-wide; use those for timed MCQ practice and revision tips.
