About these notes

Class 6 Social Science Landforms and Life gives clear notes and quick revision on major landforms, how they form and how they influence climate, soil, vegetation and human activities. Main sub-topics: mountains, plateaus, plains, hills, valleys, deserts and coasts; formation processes — tectonic uplift, volcanic action, erosion and deposition; effects — orographic rainfall, rain-shadow, alluvial and black soils; Indian examples such as the Himalaya, Indo-Gangetic Plain, Deccan Plateau and Thar Desert. Useful for Class 6 CBSE and Bihar Board students preparing for chapter tests and school exams; practise important questions, MCQ and question answer drills; Merit Spring ROH also offers chapter tests and mock tests.

Key points you will learn

Questions students ask

What are the main landforms?

Main landforms are mountains, plateaus, plains, hills, valleys, deserts and coasts. Mountains are high-relief areas, plateaus are elevated flats, plains are low-lying fertile lands; each type influences rainfall, soil and patterns of human settlement differently.

Difference between a plateau and a plain?

A plateau is an elevated flat or gently undulating area standing above surrounding land, while a plain is broad, low-lying flat land mostly formed by river deposits; plateaus often have steeper edges and different soils (for example black soil on Deccan Plateau).

How do mountains affect rainfall?

Mountains force moist air to rise, cool and condense, producing orographic rainfall on windward slopes; the leeward side receives less rain and may form a rain-shadow area. These patterns change vegetation and river flows downstream.

How to prepare map questions on landforms?

Memorise locations of key examples (Himalaya, Indo-Gangetic Plain, Deccan Plateau, Thar Desert), practise marking them on outline maps, and write short notes showing each landform's location, relief and importance.
