Temperature and its Measurement Notes

About these notes

Class 6 Science Temperature and its Measurement NCERT notes introduce temperature, how it differs from heat, and what this page gives: concise chapter notes, clear definitions, reading tips and quick revision points. Main sub-topics: difference between temperature and heat, mercury and alcohol thermometer construction, thermal expansion of liquids, fixed points (0°C, 100°C, body ≈37°C), scales and conversions (°C, °F, K), reading at eye level and parallax error, safety and care. For Class 6 students following CBSE/NCERT or Bihar Board; useful for school chapter tests, periodic assessments and quick exam revision.

Key points you will learn

  • Class 6 Science Temperature and its Measurement NCERT notes
  • Difference between temperature and heat — temperature = average kinetic energy, heat = energy transfer
  • Fixed points: freezing of water = 0°C, boiling = 100°C, normal body ≈ 37°C
  • Thermometers: mercury vs alcohol — construction, colored alcohol for low temperatures and breakage/safety tips
  • Reading tip: read the top of mercury column or alcohol meniscus at eye level to avoid parallax error
  • Conversions: K = °C + 273; °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9; °F = (°C × 9 ÷ 5) + 32
  • Why thermometers work: liquids expand on heating (thermal expansion), so the column rises to show higher temperature

Questions students ask

What is temperature?

Temperature is how hot or cold a body is and relates to the average kinetic energy of its particles. In practical terms we measure it with thermometers; temperature indicates the state (hotter/colder) not the total heat energy in an object.

Difference between temperature and heat?

Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is (a property), while heat is energy transferred between bodies due to temperature difference. Heat flows from higher to lower temperature until thermal equilibrium is reached.

How to read a mercury thermometer safely?

Hold the thermometer horizontally to bring the scale to eye level, read the top of the mercury column without tilting, and report any breakage; never heat the bulb directly and handle broken mercury with teacher guidance.

Where can I find Class 6 Science Temperature and its Measurement notes and important questions?

This page provides the chapter notes; for important questions and MCQ practice, use Merit Spring ROH chapter tests and mock tests available site-wide to try question answer practice and timed revision.

How do I convert Celsius to Kelvin and Fahrenheit?

Use K = °C + 273 to get Kelvin. To convert to Fahrenheit: °F = (°C × 9 ÷ 5) + 32. Reverse: °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 for exam and practical conversions.
