Measurement of Length and Motion Notes

✓ Free notes Class 6 Science 1 study file

About these notes

Class 6 Science Measurement of Length and Motion gives clear notes and practical examples to learn units, measuring tools, least count and basic motion ideas. Main sub-topics: units of length (m, cm, mm) and conversions; rulers, metre scale and tape; least count and precision; measuring curved objects; distance vs displacement; uniform and non-uniform motion; speed = distance ÷ time, average speed and position–time graphs. Who it's for: Class 6 students preparing for school tests, chapter test practice, revision and exam tips using important questions, MCQ and question answer practice.

Key points you will learn

  • Class 6 Science Measurement of Length and Motion: 1 m = 100 cm = 1000 mm; use correct unit symbol (m, cm, mm)
  • Always note the least count of the instrument and estimate one extra digit for better precision
  • Measure curved objects with a string or flexible tape—mark, then measure the straightened string
  • Distance is a scalar; displacement is a vector with direction and can be zero if return to start
  • Uniform motion: equal displacements in equal times; non-uniform: displacements change with time
  • Speed = distance ÷ time; average speed = total distance ÷ total time (use consistent units)
  • Position–time graph: slope = speed; straight line means uniform motion, curved/varying slope means non-uniform

Questions students ask

How do I convert centimetres to metres?

Divide by 100: 100 cm = 1 m, so 50 cm = 0.5 m. To convert metres to centimetres multiply by 100. For millimetres, remember 10 mm = 1 cm and 1000 mm = 1 m.

What is least count and why does it matter?

Least count is the smallest value an instrument can measure and it limits measurement accuracy. Always read the zero position, use the least count to estimate the last digit, and record possible uncertainty for answers.

How can I measure a curved object like a rope?

Use a thin string to follow the rope's curve, mark the ends on the string, then straighten and measure the marked length with a ruler or tape. Repeat measurements and note the instrument's least count for accuracy.

Difference between distance and displacement?

Distance is the total path length travelled (scalar) while displacement is the straight-line change in position with direction (vector). Example: walking 3 m forward and 3 m back gives distance 6 m but displacement 0 m.

Where to find Class 6 Science Measurement of Length and Motion notes and important questions?
