Materials Around Us Notes

✓ Free notes Class 6 Science 1 study file

About these notes

Class 6 Science Materials Around Us notes explain states of matter, classification by origin and measurable properties, and give simple classroom test procedures. Main sub-topics: solids, liquids and gases; natural vs synthetic materials; properties such as hardness, elasticity, flexibility, transparency, solubility and electrical/thermal conductivity; everyday examples (wood, metal, plastic, glass, rubber, fabric, ceramics) and basic conservation. This is for Class 6 (NCERT/CBSE) students preparing for school exams, unit tests and chapter tests; use the notes plus important questions, MCQ, question answer practice and focused revision — Merit Spring ROH also offers chapter tests and mock tests site-wide.

Key points you will learn

  • Class 6 Science Materials Around Us notes: states, properties and simple tests
  • States of matter — solid, liquid, gas and how particles behave (arrangement and motion)
  • Natural vs synthetic (man-made) materials with examples and selection tips
  • Hardness, elasticity, flexibility, transparency, solubility and conductivity — definitions and one-line tests
  • Simple identification tests: bending/flexing, heating/melting, dissolving, electrical conductivity test
  • Material selection rule: choose metal for strength/conductivity, glass for transparency, rubber for elasticity
  • Common examples and uses: wood, metals, plastics, glass, rubber, fabrics, ceramics; recycling reminder

Questions students ask

What is a material?

A material is a substance from which objects are made, for example wood, metal, plastic or cloth. Materials are described by properties such as hardness, elasticity and solubility that tell how they behave and where they are used.

Difference between natural and synthetic materials?

Natural materials come from plants, animals or minerals (cotton, wood, wool, stone); synthetic (man-made) materials are produced by human processing or chemicals (plastic, nylon). Give one example of use in answers to score clarity.

How to test if a material is soluble?

To test solubility, add a measured sample to a fixed amount of water, stir and observe whether it dissolves uniformly to form a solution; note amount, temperature and time, and record the observation in steps.

Where to find Class 6 Science Materials Around Us notes and important questions?

The Merit Spring ROH chapter page titled 'Materials Around Us' contains the notes; for important questions, MCQ and extra practice check site-wide chapter tests and mock tests linked from the subject pages.

How to write good exam answers on properties of materials?

Start with a short definition, list 2–3 relevant properties with brief tests or examples, add a labelled example or use, and finish with a one-line reason; include diagrams and clear procedure steps where required.
