Questions students ask

What is proto-industrialisation?

Proto-industrialisation was a stage when rural households produced goods for distant markets under merchant capital (putting-out system). It increased rural production and linked producers to market networks before large factories and mechanisation emerged.

How did the steam engine change production?

The steam engine provided reliable power independent of water, allowing larger factories and continuous machine operation. This enabled centralised production, faster textile manufacture and growth of factory towns with specialised labour and new production processes.

Why did Indian handicrafts decline during industrialisation?

Handicrafts declined because cheap machine-made British imports undercut prices, colonial trade policies reduced Indian access to markets, and many artisans lost patronage and raw materials, causing widespread unemployment in traditional sectors.
