Questions students ask

What is nationalism?

Nationalism is the belief that people who share language, culture or history should form a political community; it asserts political unity and self-rule. Nationalism in nineteenth-century Europe combined ideas of popular sovereignty, cultural identity and demands for statehood.

How did Bismarck achieve German unification?

Bismarck used realpolitik: pragmatic diplomacy, strengthening Prussia’s army and three wars (Denmark 1864, Austria 1866, France 1870–71) to bring German states under Prussian leadership and secure the German Empire in 1871. He balanced power and used alliances tactically.

Difference between Mazzini and Cavour in Italian unification?

Mazzini advocated popular revolution and a democratic republic (Young Italy) while Cavour pursued state-led unification through diplomacy, alliances and Piedmont’s statecraft; Garibaldi’s volunteers later united the south with the north.
