About these notes

Class 10 Math Statistics notes give concise formulas, worked methods and practice tips to compute mean, median and mode for ungrouped and grouped data. Main sub-topics: building frequency distributions, class mark and class boundaries, direct and assumed mean methods, grouped median using cumulative frequency, modal-class formula for grouped mode, and computing Σf and Σ(f·x) for checks. Also includes tips on choosing equal class intervals, writing units and showing intermediate totals. For Class 10 students preparing for school exams, chapter tests, revision and Merit Spring ROH mock tests — use these notes with important questions and MCQ for exam-style practice.

Key points you will learn

  • Class 10 Math Statistics: Mean (ungrouped) = Σx / n — always show Σx and n
  • Grouped mean = Σ(f·x) / Σf where x = class mark; assumed mean: mean = A + (Σf·d)/Σf with d = xi − A
  • Class mark x = (lower limit + upper limit) / 2; class width h = upper − lower and use class boundaries for grouped work
  • Grouped median = L + ((N/2 − c.f.)/f)·h — compute cumulative frequency (c.f.) before the median class
  • Grouped mode = L + ((f1−f0)/(2f1−f0−f2))·h — identify modal class and f0,f1,f2 correctly
  • Always write totals Σf, units (minutes, kg, etc.), and intermediate columns like Σ(f·x), c.f. and class marks
  • Build frequency table with equal class intervals, check boundaries and show working to avoid calculation errors and gain method marks

Questions students ask

How to find class mark?

Add the lower and upper limits of the class and divide by 2; for 40–50 the class mark = (40+50)/2 = 45. For grouped calculations use class boundaries (lower boundary and upper boundary) so the class mark matches the values used in Σ(f·x).

How to calculate median from grouped data?

Use Median = L + ((N/2 − c.f.)/f)·h. First compute cumulative frequencies to locate the median class (c.f. ≥ N/2), then substitute L (lower boundary), c.f. before class, f of median class and class width h.

What is assumed mean method and when to use it?

Assumed mean simplifies arithmetic when class marks are large or calculations get lengthy: choose a convenient A, compute di = xi − A, then mean = A + (Σf·d)/Σf. Use it to reduce big multiplications and rounding work.
